How to Choose a Fiber Laser Protective Lens: Why Are Some So Cheap?

1. How to Choose the Right Laser Protective Lens

A fiber laser protective lens, also called a protective window or cover glass, protects the internal optics of a laser cutting head from dust, fumes and metal spatter.

Before buying a replacement, check these five specifications:

  • Size: Confirm the diameter and thickness, such as 27.9×4.1mm, 30×5mm or 37×7mm.

  • Compatibility: Match the exact laser cutting head model and the upper or lower installation position.

  • Material: Confirm that the lens uses suitable optical-grade fused silica or quartz glass.

  • AR coating: For common fiber laser systems, check that the anti-reflective coating matches the operating wavelength, typically around 1064 nm.

  • Laser power and optical quality: Confirm the supplier's specifications for transmission, absorption, surface quality and laser damage resistance.

Important: Matching dimensions and rated power alone does not guarantee that two protective lenses have the same optical performance.

2. Why Are Some Laser Protective Lenses So Cheap?

Two protective lenses may have the same dimensions and advertised power rating but very different prices. Common reasons include:

1. Different raw materials

Optical-grade fused silica comes in different grades and quality levels. Material purity, homogeneity and internal defects can affect optical performance and production cost.

Note: now there is refurbished protective lens in the market, it is very cheap. For example, one 37x7mm lens only have a burned pot on the surface, some factory will collect these kind of lens and use them produce small size lens like 34x5mm.

2. Different coating quality

An anti-reflective (AR) coating must suit the laser wavelength. Coating uniformity, durability and quality control can influence transmission, absorption and service life.

3. Different surface quality and dimensional tolerances

Surface scratches, flatness, parallelism and dimensional accuracy affect optical quality and fit. A lens that looks identical may not meet the same manufacturing specifications.

4. Different inspection standards

Suppliers may use different inspection procedures, acceptance criteria and batch quality controls. More consistent testing and traceability can add cost.

Note: Some factories lack quality inspection, resulting in a high number of defective lenses. While their per-unit price may be very low, some lenses arrive already damaged and completely unusable. Consequently, even though the initial price is low—for instance, if only 6 or 7 out of every 10 lenses are actually functional—the effective cost ends up being the same as, or even higher than, that of more expensive (and higher-quality) products.

5. Different brands and sales channels

Original branded parts may include brand premiums, distribution costs, packaging and after-sales support. OEM replacement lenses can cost less because they are sold without the same brand positioning or distribution structure.

However, a low price does not automatically mean poor quality, and a high price does not automatically guarantee better performance. Compare documented specifications and actual quality rather than price alone.

3. Original vs OEM Laser Protective Lenses

For workshops that frequently replace protective windows, OEM laser protective lenses can be a cost-effective alternative to original branded parts.

A suitable OEM replacement should match the required dimensions, material, coating, optical performance and cutting head compatibility. Some OEM products may come through overlapping optical supply chains, but this should be verified rather than assumed.

Before purchasing, ask the supplier for the lens specifications, compatibility details and quality inspection information.

Note: Our OEM lens have same quality like original BOCHU and Raytools laser consuambles as from same suppliers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best material for a fiber laser protective lens?

Optical-grade fused silica is commonly used. Confirm the material grade and optical specifications with the supplier.

Why is an OEM laser protective lens cheaper than an original lens?

Differences in branding, distribution, material grade, coating, inspection and manufacturing specifications can affect price. Compare the actual specifications before deciding.

Can I choose a protective lens based only on laser power?

No. Check the cutting head model, installation position, diameter, thickness, wavelength and coating requirements as well as laser power.
